lyrics

Saltwater Blues
by Ryan Voss

I hunger & thirst with aching head
Come home with just enough bread
Satiated for another few hours
As another spoke on the wheel
I’m not the only one with need to vent
Each day’s wages face tomorrow all spent
Losing ourselves up the ladder
In fading hope of a better deal

Saltwater blues,
There’s just enough to keep us floating
Without direction or refreshment
Saltwater blues,
Just enough to fill your glass & drain you dry

Saltwater blues,
Keeping us adrift & delusional
Slowly sapping up our brains
No stimulus for the restless,
Only a fool can stay sane

So little time to let myself be
Alive only for the mundane routine
Paying dues for the rat race with just enough stamina
To do it again & again & again & again
And we’re all working & paying our fair share
Taxing our nerves, health, wits & hair
Only doing as we want here, if it don’t interfere
With what our livelihood depends

Saltwater blues,
There’s just enough to keep us floating
Without direction or refreshment
Saltwater blues,
Just enough to fill your glass & drain you dry

Saltwater blues,
Keeping us adrift & delusional
Slowly sapping up our brains
No stimulus for the restless,
Stick out your hand & pray for rain

My kingdom for a doorway out
I’d kiss it with cracked lips
It’s sure to pop open wide just in the nick of time
When I’m old, arthritic & sick
No longer grinding gears, free at last
For my few remaining years not yet tumbled past
In vain pursuit of all those dreams I’ll be too senile to remember

Saltwater blues,
There’s just enough to keep us floating
Without direction or refreshment
Saltwater blues,
Just enough to fill your glass & drain you dry

Saltwater blues,
Keeping us adrift & delusional
Slowly sapping up our brains
No stimulus for the restless,
And only a fool can stay sane
