about

Ghosts & Shadows was a song I composed some years back- probably 2007 or 2008- on piano. Years later, having switched my choice instrument from piano to guitar, I re-taught myself the song on guitar & performed it a few times. In the back of my mind, I had a fantasy about a female vocalist taking charge on it while I plunged myself into the backing vocals with multi-part harmonies inspired by the late Gerry Rafferty. My dream came true, and then some, with the arrival of Vista; a Texan duo comprised of the dazzling vocalist, Mindy Michelle, & guitarist virtuoso, Kelyn Crapp. With Kelyn on lead guitars & Mindy as its main vocalist, Ghosts & Shadows stands out as a personal favorite composition, made all the better as well by Ben’s drums & No’s bass.

lyrics

Ghosts & Shadows
by Ryan Voss

Cloudy eyes to a blue sky and a pristine lake
Waking to the morn and memories a bit vague
Rising to a time I’ve wished away
When I entertain your ghost
Breach the peace with bland small talk and
mundane tasks
Tears of longing locked away behind a mask
Burdened with questions too painful to ask
While I entertain your ghost

Thoughts abroad in merry tunnel vision
Ghosts and shadows dance about the empty room
Parish the notion that they’ll soon disappear
As I sink deeper into the murky everglade
Sugarplums return to slumber in the dreams I’ve
laid
Misty eyes return to greet the dawn
And softly cry

Yesterday, an eternity of joyful bliss
Not enough appreciation until days like this
Grasping for your reach; just empty air in my fist
As I entertain your ghost

Nights are cold and forlorn while the daytime forgets
The warm embrace I miss, imagined in your silhouette
Longing for answers to my prayers, but still nothing yet
I’ll just entertain your ghost

Thoughts abroad in merry tunnel vision
Ghosts and shadows dance a-bout the empty room
Parish the notion that they’ll soon disappear
As I sink deeper into the murky everglade
Sugarplums return to slumber in the dreams I’ve
laid
Misty eyes return to greet the dawn
And softly cry

And softly cry…

As I sink deeper into the murky everglade
Sugarplums dance and prance around…
And return to the dreams I’ve laid
Misty eyes return to greet the dawn
And I’m still crying…

Reality beckons; I’m oblivious to its call
Can’t bear to consider that I’ve lost you after all
Wasting away while autumn days slow to a crawl
As I entertain your ghost
'Cause it's cloudy eyes to a blue sky and a pristine lake
Waking to the morn and memories a bit vague
Rising to a time; I never thought I’d see the day
When I entertain your ghost

I just entertain your ghost

I just entertain your ghost

I just entertain your ghost

I just entertain…

…entertain your ghost
