On a Personal Note:
This album has been probably the most grandiose undertaking of my musical career thus far, with myself wearing the hats of not only artist and bandleader, but also that of arranger and producer. It should also be noted that this project brought about the greatest incarnation of 'The Revolving Door' concept, involving collaborations with a larger variant of local talent and even one individual from all the way in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
One of the most daunting aspects of this undertaking was deciding which of Stevie's songs to include. It's my first album being somewhat over-prepared, having at least 20 potential tunes in mind but needing to wittle that down to an easy 12 for a single disc. I intentionally avoided songs that, while they are major pop hits and withstand the test of time, would ultimately have been simply rehashed here. I wanted to explore songs of his that I can reinterpret musically in my own way, plus draw attention to great songs that are otherwise overlooked, such as 'Smile Please' and 'Superwoman'.
Stevie Wonder was and is the first of my musical heroes, going way back to my childhood. His compositions and arrangements carry a unique soundscape and technical prowess, particularly in the eras this collection of tunes originally came from. Also, no one expresses true love and the depths of vulnerability therein like Stevie, as evident in songs like 'Overjoyed' or 'As'. He was the first to spark my lifelong passion with music and the places it could take you to.
This album is affectionately dedicated to a dear friend who has been by my side through thick and thin. She knows who she is.
And of course it's also dedicated to the man, himself, Stevie Wonder!
As this album is coming out around the holiday season,
I also offer this as a pleasant alternative to the usual Christmas fair.
